Equatoria Under Egyptian Rule

Cairo: Cairo University Press, 1953. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto, xvii, 478 (1)pp. Original black Morocco over textured green leather with gilt lettering and ruling on spine; raised bands. The unpublished correspondence of Col. (afterwards Major-Gen.) C. G. Gordon with Ismail Khedive of Egypt and the Sudan during the years 1874-1876.

"The documents relating to the history of the Sudan in the Nineteenth Century are abundant. But here I am solely concerned with that collection of papers, a part of which I am publishing in this book, and which is to be found in the Archives under the title: 'Correspondence Gordon Pacha'. True, parts of this 'Correspondence' were examined by writers before. Yet none of these writers to my knowledge have had the opportunity to make a synthetic study of the whole, or to make a fuller use of the correspondence. And it is this fact which has persuaded me to produce the present work." (Preface).

Contains detailed list of correspondence examined and is illustrated with numerous maps, some of them with colored augmentation, one loosely laid in and one folded. Contains several appendices and notes, extensive bibliography and index at rear. Binding lightly rubbed and ever so slightly starting at inside back cover. Very good condition. Item #50922
