Tchikamatsou reinvented the banal puppet theater to become a pseudo-epic style: Ningyo-Joruri. He is also credited with turning vulgar juggling acts into performances deserving of the name theater (kabuki). In Japan Tchikamatsou was revered to the extent that he was referred to as the "Japanese Shakespeare." According to the Encyclopedia Britanica he "widely regarded as the greatest Japanese dramatist."
