Inscribed "à Fernand Desmoulin son ami Emile Zola" on half-title. Desmoulin , a good friend of Zola, and an esteemed French painter and talented engraver. This collection represents the main texts of Zola's involvement in the Dreyfus affair, his fight for truth and justice beginning on November 25, 1897, his first article for Dreyfus.

The photograph shows the publisher Georges Charpentier, the engraver Fernand Desmoulin and the writer Emile Zola dressed in white suits standing together with Desmoulin attempting to light the pipe of Charpentier while Zola stands with open hands so as to shield the attempt from wind.
