Templeton himself was a professional skateboarder and founder of the skateboard company Toy Machine, based in Huntington Beach, California. Templeton is also regarded as a influential photographer and artist and gained his reputation despite the fact that he had no formal training. Templeton's photography book "Teenage Smokers" won the Italian Search For Art competition, his artwork was featured in Juxtapoz magazine and in 2002 his work was featured in the exhibition "The Essential Disturbance" at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Deformer represents the culmination of eleven years of work and research exploring Orange County, the area he spent his formative years, combing Templeton's work in the artistic fields mentioned above.
