A Rabbi's Impressions of the Oberammergau Passion Play: Being a Series of Six Lectures. - With Three Supplemental Chapters Bearing on the Subject

Philadelphia: International Printing, 1922. Softcover. Octavo. 226pp. Brown printed wrappers with black lettering on the front cover and spine. The work is an analysis of the famous Oberammergau Passion Play, from a scholarly Jewish perspective. The play had long been internationally controversial for its open anti-Semitic content. At the suggestion of his wife, prominent Philadelphia Reform Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf (1858-1923) had seen a performance of this passion play in Germany, and originally presented his thoughts on the subject in the form of a series of six lectures (or sermons) to his congregation, sometime around the turn of the 20th century. The popularity these lectures necessitated earlier print versions in periodical form. In 1901 they were originally published in book form and supplemented with three additional chapters containing broader analysis of the New Testament. Included here are some occasional printed marginal notes throughout the text, as well as an index at the back. Wrappers with some light rubbing, creasing, and/or chipping to extremities. A few pages contain light creases, closed tears, and/or light chipping in the margins. Wrappers and interior in very good- condition overall. Protected in modern mylar. vg-. Item #49448
