大阪市 (Osaka): 鄉土の光社 (Kyodo no Hikarisha), [Showa 10] 1935. First edition. Hardcover. Small folio. Unpaginated. 52 [1] plates. Leporello binding. Light blue decorative silk-covered boards with illustrated woodblock-printed paper label printed on the front cover. Housed in the original brown cloth portfolio with bone fasteners and the same illustrated label pasted on the front cover. Decorative endpapers speckled in gold.

This scarce work is a visual survey of a variety of local Japanese folkloric toys and dolls. It contains a collection of items from various regions of Japan, rendered in exquisite detail in the form of 25 color woodblock plates with vibrant overprinting and accents in gilt and silver metallic inks, created by artist Keigetsu Shimizu. The work was produced at a time when there was a need to catalog and preserve these rapidly disappearing local art forms and crafts. The items here range widely from dolls (including daruma, miharu, fushimi, tsutumi), children's games, magical mallets (Uchide no kozuchi), decorative masks and various animal and mythical figurines, often relating to local customs, superstitions or shrine and temple traditions. Each plate depicts multiple items, is printed on heavy stock cardboard, and contains the artist's name and printed chop in the lower corner. These gorgeous plates all measure 10 1/2 x 9 1/4" and are held in place by silk thread. The opposite pages contain mounted detailed descriptions of the plates, printed on rice paper and illustrated with monochromic motifs. Mounted table of contents mounted on the first leaf, and a text from the publisher mounted on the final leaf. Publication information pasted on the to interior of the portfolio.

Text in Japanese.

Portfolio with minor rubbing to corners, and a small inscription from a previous owner on one of the interior flaps. Binding with a few minor smudges to the front cover. Interior with some sporadic minor to light smudges to the plates. A few of the plates have small stains, but all images remain vibrant and quite clean overall. Portfolio and binding in near fine, interior in very good+ condition overall. Item #49390
