Antoinne Malliarakis (Mayo) (1905-1990) was born in Port Said, Egypt. Moving to France in 1924 he met Man Ray, Desnos, Tzara and Salmon in Paris. In 1927 he was introduced to André Breton by René Crevel and in 1929 Mayo exhibited his work with Chirico at the Galerie des Quatre Chemins. He returned to Egypt in 1934 and later back to France, spending six years in Cannes with his friend Prévert during the German occupation.

In 1944 Prévert recommended him as a costume designer for the film "Les Enfants du Paradis" which lead to a successful career in this genre for some twenty years. In 1966 Mayo moved to Rome and established himself as a painter. In the early eighties Mayo gradually lost his eyesight and moved back to France in 1985 where he received the Grade de Commandeur de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
