Dikduk de-lishan shel kasda'in ve-rabanin: sive Chaldaismus targumico-talmudico-rabbinicus... editio tertia (Grammar of Biblical and Rabbinic Aramaic)

Kiel: Gottfried Liebezeit, 1696. Hardcover. Small quarto. [8], 196pp. Folding table and two folding paradigm charts. Contemporary half vellum over marbled boards, edges stained blue, early library label at spine, contemporary inscription and faint library stamps at title, board edges worn, otherwise a very good copy, with clean marbled covers and fine, fresh text.

Third, expanded edition of this Aramaic grammar, first published at Kiel in 1682, which treats the dialectical variants encountered in the ancient Aramaic paraphrases of the Hebrew Bible (Targumim), the Aramaic portions of the biblical books of Daniel and Ezra, and the Talmud. The present edition is now furnished with a 12-page index of difficult terms and anomalies discussed throughout the grammar. Born at Altenberg in Misnia, the Lutheran divine Heinrich Opitz (1642-1712) was professor of the Oriental languages and theology at Kiel. Opitz published as well a small work defending his “chimerical scheme of subjecting the Greek language to the rules of the Hebrew” which was no bar to his being “deservedly reckoned one of the most learned men of his age...” (McClintock & Strong 7:387).

Provenance: manuscript entry of the Jesuit seminary in Heidelberg, dated 1743; faint old library stamps. Very Good. Item #49241

Aramaic title: דקדוק דלישן של כשדאין ורבנין
