Recent wrappers. Small perforation at fore-margin title (with old repair), barest marginal worm traces in final four leaves. A very good, clean copy.

First edition, second issue of this posthumous publication, offered with a fine copy of G. J. Hoenderdaal’s critical edition (from the library Dr. Ronald Breugelmans, with his dated entry). A foundation-stone for the history of Arminianism and the Dutch Remonstrant movement, this important tract led to fierce theological and political controversy in the seventeenth century. In its emphasis on the grace of God, Arminianism influenced the development of Methodism in England and the United States. Jacob Arminius (1560-1609) was professor of theology at the University of Leiden from 1603 until his death in 1609. His challenge to the Reformed standard, the Belgic Confession, provoked ample discussion after his death at the Synod of Dort, which crafted the five points of Calvinism in response to Arminius' heterodox teaching. Very Good. Item #49212
