Later polished calf; richly gilt spine with gilt-stamped lettering piece; triple gilt filets at covers; board edges ruled; edges stained red; inner dentelles; marbled endleaves. Occasional mild foxing. Tiny worm hole sometimes obscuring a letter in early leaves of the first volume. A nearly fine, handsomely bound set.
First edition of the celebrated ‘Livre d’Or du Protestantisme français’. It is of primordial importance for the period 1521-1563 and among of the chief source books for the history of French- and Swiss Protestantism during the sixteenth century. Long attributed to the Calvinist theologian, Théodore de Bèze (1519-1605), it is now generally assumed to have been written by his fellow Calvinist theologian, humanist, translator and writer, Simon Goulart (1543-1628), based on materials gathered by de Bèze since 1565.
Provenance: With a wonderful bookseller’s handwritten bill (Mr. Scherff, libraire, Ave de l’Oratoire S. Honoré No. 6) dated 1 Décembre 1821 offering the set for fr. 39. Nearly Fine. Item #49122
