A Collection of Photographs of the Lod Airport (Ben-Gurion Airport) from the British Mandate Period and Early History of The State of Israel (25 images)

ca. 1930s-1970s. Original photographs. The collection is comprised of 25 mostly undated b/w photographs of various sizes, plus a small map. Most of the images date from the period of the 1930s and 1940s during the earliest years of the airport (now known as Ben-Gurion International Airport) and its first era of commercial airlines. There are also a few later images of IDF military aircraft, dating from the first three decades of the State of Israel.

Content:
- 1 photo of a propeller plane on the runway...(8 1/2 x 6") glossy (ca. 1950s?)
- 2 aerial photographs of planes in flight. An image of an aerial refueling of fighter jets by a Boeing B-29 Superfortress (shot from below), and an image of a IDF Douglas SBD Dauntless in flight. (8 x 6") glossy (ca. 1950s-1960s?)
- 1 photograph of a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II jet fighter on the runway. Contains the official ink stamp of the IDF on the back, confirming that it has been cleared for use (5x7") glossy. ca. 1970s
- 2 photographs of a KLM plane on the runway with passengers (3 1/2 x 4 1/2") matte ca. 1930s.
- 18 photographs of various planes on the runway and images of passengers posing, including the earliest commercial carriers to use the airport: Imperial Airlines (London), KLM, Misr Airlines (Egyptair), LOT Polish Airlines. (2 1/4 x 3 1/4"). ca. 1930s.
- 1 photo of passengers posing (2 1/2 x 2 1/2") ca. 1930s.
- 1 panoramic image of the (Lydda) Airport from 1937, comprising 3 photographs taped together, from the period when it was comprised of just a few small low-lying buildings and tents, with unpaved runways. (measuring a total of approx. 2 x9")
- A map of the airport, circa the mid 1940s, printed in brown, on tan paper measuring approx. (5 1/2 x 6 1/2").

Photographs bowed, with some adhesive residue, and/or notes in pencil on the back of some. Minor creasing and/or stains along the edges of a few of the larger images. The refueling image, has a few creases closed tears and small abrasions to the photograph. Most photographs in in very good condition overall. vg. Item #48922
