Pasted frontispiece illustration by Arthur Szyk depicting Duke Boleslaus the Pious and the Statute of Kalisz of 1264, which became the basis for Jewish communal rights. A history of the Jewish community of Kalisz in central Poland. This community included such figures as R. Abraham Gombiner, the author of "Magen Avraham," and R. Zvi Hirsch Chajes. During the Holocaust, the vast majority of the city's 25,000 Jews were murdered by the Nazis. The book includes numerous biographies of prominent members of the community. Contains numerous b/w photographs and drawings. Text in Hebrew and Yiddish. Minor foxing to covers and spine. Protected in mylar dust jackets.
