Octavo. xv, 502, viii, 440pp. Original three-quarter calf over marbled boards with blind-stamped lettering, gilt ruling and tooling on spines; raised bands, protected by modern mylar. Red speckled edges. Green endpapers. Frontispiece engravings with tissue guards. Biography of the English artist, traveler, Egyptologist and Consul to his Majesty Henry Salt, rendered mostly based on his correspondence. The account of Mr. Salt's transactions with the British Museum is treated in a separate article at the end of the book. Next to his accomplishments as a diplomat he is known for sponsoring the excavations at Thebes and Abu Simbel as well as his significant research at the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Many of the antiquities from his private collection were bought by the British Museum. Volume II contains Salt's poem "Egypt," originally published privately in 1824 in Alexandria. Binding with some scuffing of calf spine and edges, back board of volume two loose but present. Marbled boards lightly rubbed. Very light, sporadic foxing of blocks. Good to very good condition.
