Publisher's device on title page. Decorative head and endpieces. Decorative initials. Remarkable travelogue of the expedition up the Nile to Aswan, documenting ancient monuments and shedding light on the natural history of Egypt. Granger (Tourtechot), a French physician and traveler, undertook this voyage during a stay with his friend Jean Pierre Pignon, the French Consul in Cairo. Contains chapters on birds, fish and plants, artificial ammoniac salt and how to hatch chickens, ducks and geese. The flower Grangeria, family of Chrysobalanaceae, is named after him. Granger died on his way to Persia in Basra during a subsequent voyage he was commissioned to by King Louis XV of France. Text in French. Binding with some scuffing, chips at corners and reinforced with library tape along spine. Previous owner's name and date inked to front free endpaper, starting here at bottom half.
