Moscow: Emes, 1937. First Yiddish edition. Softcover. Octavo. 51pp. . Illustrated white and blue paper wrappers with blue lettering on the covers. Covers in Yiddish and Russian. This is the extremely scarce first Yiddish-language edition of A.S. Pushkin's famous Russian fairytale, "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". This edition, issued by Yiddish publisher "Emes" in Moscow, was one of many such Yiddish translations of Pushkin's work from the publisher, issued in 1937, in honor of the 100 year anniversary of the poet's death. This came at a time when authorities made efforts to promote Soviet proletarian culture within the country's Yiddish-speaking communities. This was in direct contrast to the post-war period, when Stalin's government attempted to stamp out all Yiddish and Jewish culture in the Soviet Union. The text is accompanied throughout by 10 b/w photographic reproductions (including the front cover) after original artwork and previous illustrations. Additionally the bottom of the final text page contains a woodcut engraved illustration in black.
Text throughout in Yiddish, with both Yiddish and Russian-language covers.
Wrappers with some light chipping, staining, rubbing and few closed tears. Light chipping and rubbing to the spine. Interior age toning to pages and some staining along the upper side margin of the pages throughout. Text unaffected. Illustrated ex-libris sticker from a previous owner (N. Surovezin) on the interior front cover. Wrappers and interior in good condition overall. Extremely scarce. Protected by modern mylar. g. Item #48445
