Bound in the fifty-seven page supplement with epilog, general commentary and systematical overview at rear.

First Russian edition of Haeckel's periodical publications of Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms of Nature) released in sets of 10 plates from 1899 to 1904. In 1904, when it was released as a bound edition this Russian translation was also issued with all 100 plates of the original edition, including spectacular chromolithographs, complemented with color duo-tone and striking b/w offset reproductions of photographs and artwork depicting an array of organisms such as animals, plants, fungus, and microorganisms. Each plate accompanied by two to three pages of descriptive text. Thirty-five of the plates have additional transparent overlays printed on tissue and bound in with printed numbers and shapes of respective organisms relating to the descriptive text.

Text in Russian. Binding lightly rubbed with light wear along edges, bumped at lower foredge corner, and very light staining on front, some light scratching on back cover. Spine lightly cocked. Plate 34 with 3/4 inch closed tear at bottom edge below framing of plat, not affecting image. Book block slightly age-toned not affecting images. Binding in overall good+, interior in good+ to very good, plates in fine condition. vg. Item #48110

Haeckel named thousands of new species and described them, mapped a genealogical tree relating to all life forms and claimed that the origins of humanity were to be found in Lemuria, a lost continent in the Indian Ocean, rejecting Charles Darwin's hypothesis of Africa.
