Unique Scrapbook of 19th Century Chromolithographs, Period Advertisements, and Other Personal Ephemera
[ca. late 19th century]. Hardcover. Thin folio. 16x7". [36 pages]. 3/4 period brown leather over brown mottled paper boards. Chromolithographic card pasted on the front cover. Judging by the latest dated found in the book, it was assembled by an unknown owner sometime shortly after the year 1900. It contains a total of 123 individual pieces pasted on to a total of 36 pages, including 86 gorgeous and delightful chromolithographic images of all kinds (including greeting cards, advertisements, cartoons, and book and magazine illustrations), as well as other duo-tone lithographs or engraved images (some overprinted finely in gold). The imagery often includes staples of the period such as children, animals and floral motifs. Also present are newspaper and magazine text clippings and advertisements, 3 period receipts, and 1 handwritten letter. All of the contents seem to date from a period between the 1850s and the turn of the twentieth century, with all believed to be American in origin (most dated dateditems originate from the 1880s). Some items include attributions and/or dates, but many do not. This collection amounts to a vivid and and engaging visual overview of the advertising, fashion, and commerce of the Victorian period.
Binding with some rubbing, bumping and light chipping to extremities, including the spine. Covers with some scratches and some light soiling to the front. Binding tight overall. Interior with some sporadic light water stains and/or smudges to some pages throughout. This is usually limited to the margins of the pages, with most pasted on images unaffected, still clean and bright. Binding in good-, interior in very good- condition overall.
