Flandin's expedition to Iran in 1840 has left the finest illustrated record of Qajar Persia. He was accompanied by the architect Pascal Coste and the the expedition was attached to the French diplomatic mission in Iran, supported by the L'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The objective of the expedition was to record the sculpture and monuments of ancient Persia as well as the important examples of later architecture that had survived the Qajar period.

Of the hundreds of drawings produced in the two years of travel few survived to the present day. The original Perse Moderne (1854) was published in six volumes. The images depict mosques, Royal palaces, tombs, ruins, etc. and were produced with photo offset lithography for this extraordinary set. Our description is based on the preface to this facsimile edition.
