Paramount Pictures [BOOK OF 608 PRODUCTION STILLS, ON 38 SILVER GELATIN PRINTS, INCLUDING MANY LOST FILMS, 1927-1928]

[Los Angeles]: Paramount Pictures, [1928]. First edition. Hardcover. Oblong large octavo. [38 leaves]. Metal screw binding. Black buckram boards with Paramount logo and lettering in gilt on the front cover. This promotional volume collects stills from 38 individual Paramount Pictures silent films, from the years 1927-1928. Each film is is represented by a single silver gelatin print mounted on cloth backing, containing a series of 16 individual smaller b/w images from the film. Most of the films included here were released throughout the year 1927, while a few were released in early 1928, likely dating the assembly of this book to sometime in the early part of that year. The Paramount logo is stamped on the bottom corners of each print. There is a total of 608 film still images throughout. Considering the complete lack of text content, its likely that the book was used for internal circulation within the studio.

The book contains images from a number of acclaimed films such as Josef von Sternberg's seminal gangster film "Underworld" and Victor Flemings's "The Way of All Flesh" (now lost), which earned star Emil Jannings the first Academy Award for best actor. Additionally there are films directed by comedy star Fatty Arbuckle and pioneering female director Dorothy Arzner, those containing writing contributions from acclaimed screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, as well as films starring Harold Lloyd, Eddie Cantor, Bebe Daniels, Gary Cooper, Richard Dix, Wallace Beery, Pola Negri, Adolphe Menjou, Clara Bow, Ronald Coleman, and Louise Brooks. The final leaf contains the original, and now lost, silent film adaptation of Anita Loos' comic novel, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". Considering that a majority of the films featured here are now believed to be lost, this collection offers invaluable insight into the late silent era of Hollywood, its stars, and a large number of now vanished pieces of cinema history.
