An original copper-plate-engraved map of the city of Paramaribo, the historic capital of Suriname. The plate originates from the 1774 Amsterdam edition of Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles' 15-volume "Histoire generale des voyages". This map was created by geographer and French naval cartographer Jacques-Nicholas Bellin (1703-1772) for the first edition of that work (1746–1759). The map depicts the city of Paramaribo on the banks of the Suriname River, in finely rendered detail. It notably includes Fort Zelandia to the north and also shows the location of Portuguese Jewish Synagogue, one of the earliest synagogues in the Americas, founded in 1685. Text in French. Minor creasing along the right margin of the leaf. In very good+ condition overall. Protected in modern mylar. vg+. Item #47967
