According to Nevin's bibliography this biography is considered "a classic example of biographical form; exhaustively researched, vividly written, balanced, judicious and definite in its portrayal of the Confederacy's greatest soldier" (Nevin II, 57). Illustrated with sixty-five b/w photographs and documents, including frontispieces, one folding and numerous in-text maps. This is a later printing of the first Scribner's Sons edition of 1934-35.
