In Defence of Judaism: Abraham Ibn Daud. Sources and Structures of ha-Emunah ha-Ramah

Assen / Maastricht: Van Gorcum, 1990. First edition. Softcover. Quarto. 334pp. [1]. Red soft cloth wrappers with white lettering on the front cover and spine. Part of the series "Studia Semitica Neerlanica", the work is a study of Sephardic Rabbi Abraham Ibn Daud's (aka RABad, ca. 1110-1180) philosophical treatise ha-Emunah ha-Ramah (The Exalted Faith). It examines questions of modern interpretation, which usually assume that the work is primarily concerned with working out a synthesis between philosophy and religion, or whether by contrast, it is as Ibn Daud indicates at the beginning of the book, a work on the nature of free will. Additionally there is a study of the Jewish and Islamic sources from which Ibn Daud drew, and their incorporation of the philosophy of the Islamic Aristotelians al-Farabi and Ibn Sina into his own work. Wrappers with light bumping and/or rubbing to extremities. Light creasing to some corners, and sunning to the spine. Previous owner's sticker on interior front cover. Book block tight. Wrappers in good+, interior in near fine condition overall. g+ to near fine. Item #47312
