Original umber cloth with gilt and debossed lettering on covers, silver on spine; housed in matching umber board slipcase with printed label on cover. Orange endpapers. English and Japanese title pages printed in red and black. Beautifully illustrated with 116 plates of b/w photographs by Tatsuzo Sato and architectural plans with view of the exterior as well as interior, including many art objects. "The Katsura Imperial Villa (Katsura-no-Rikyu) is situated at Shimo Katsura, in the southwest suburbs of Kyoto, on the banks of the Katsura River, and occupies some 13,000 tsubo of land (about 11 acres). Originally it was Prince Katsura's villa, but it finally became an imperial villa in 1883." (Hiriguchi). Description of plates from pages eight to fourteen. Text in Japanese and English. Slipcase with light sunning on back and very light wear along edges. Pages seven through nine of English text with heavy creasing in margins but intact. Spine of slipcase missing.
