Illustrated b/w frontispiece. The work is an account of Washington state Christian missionary Myron Eells (1843-1907), and his work among the Skokomish tribe of the Puget Sound basin. The work covers a wide range of topics, covering both the history and culture of the people, and serving as a memoir of Eells' religious and missionary work. Through the publication of this book and three others Eells gained a national reputation as a scholar of Native American studies. The book includes a few instances of illustrated figures and plates of engraved portraits throughout.

Binding with some rubbing and bumping to extremities. Upper right corner of the front cover with some light soiling and rippling. Ex-library, with stickers on the front cover and tail of the spine. Ink stamps on the top and bottom edges of the book block. Library bookplate on the interior front cover, ink stamp on the front free endpaper. Library index card and sticker pasted on the interior back cover. Tearing near the gutter between vii and p.16 (ix-12 detached but present, 13-16 weak). Book block, and binding quite tight otherwise. Myron Eells (1843-1907), was in addition to his pioneering work as a missionary in the Northwest United States, a known scholar and collector of Native American artifacts. His collection ultimately came to include over 1600 pieces, and was eventually donated to Whitman College and the Maxey Museum. He published four books and numerous other articles and essays on these subjects.
