Moscow: І. Кнебель (I. Knebel), 1911. First edition. Hardcover. Large quarto. 187pp. [1]. Tan, green and red paper boards with decorative floral motifs. Dark green lettering on the front cover and spine. This comprehensive survey covering the life and work of Russian artist Mikhail Aleksandrovich Vrubel (1856-1910) is considered the first real monograph on the subject ever published. The author, Stepan Yaremich was himself a notable artist and art critic in the pre-Revolutionary and early Soviet eras. The volume was produced as the first part of the series of illustrated monographs on Russian artists, edited by painter and art historian Igor Grabar (1871-1960) and published by Joseph Knebel (1854-1926).

The work is profusely illustrated throughout with fine b/w photographic reproductions of Vrubel's work, as well as 5 plates of tipped in reproductions (4 in color) on brown heavy cardstock. There are two additional plates of b/w gravure reproductions. All images throughout captioned. The final two pages discuss the publication of the series, and there planned upcoming publications.
