Warsaw: Towarzystwa im. Elizy Orzeszkowej, 1935. Softcover. Octavo. (xxii) [2] 285pp. [1]. Brown wrappers with decorative art deco design and lettering in silver on the covers and spine. Pages uncut and unopened. The work, a modernist Polish epistolary novel, was originally published in 1904 and initially only credited to the acclaimed writer Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841-1910). Many years later it was discovered that the book had been secretly co-written with Polish writer, zoologist and professor Tadeusz Garbowski (1869-1940), with this critical edition to be the first properly crediting his contributions. The book takes the form of an ongoing romantic correspondence between a man and a woman, which is used as an examination of the two different philosophies of its characters. It has been revealed that in the collaboration of the two authors Orzeszkowa was responsible for writing the female character (Seweryna Zdrojowska) while Grabowski wrote the male character (Tomasz Rodowski). The initial pages of this edition contain a foreword examining of the writing process of the novel, and contain correspondence between the two authors. Cover design by Roman Kłopotowski.
