Hamburg: NP, ca. 1962. Loose leaf. A collection of 7 woodcut illustrations by acclaimed Flemish artist and illustrator Frans Masereel. 6 images measure 5 1/2 x 7 3/4", and are printed in b/w on tan-colored Japan vellum, while the final image is a b/w illustrated cut-out from an unidentified book, mounted on heavy stock arches paper, measuring 5x7". Masereel, known for his pioneering work in wordless novels, also illustrated countless works of other writers, to equally striking effect, with his famous expressionistic b/w woodcut prints. The striking images from "The Old Man and the Sea", are 6 of 8 images used to illustrate the 1959 German-language edition of the Hemingway classic. These images were issued by themselves in a portfolio issued in 1962. The Hemingway prints all have moderate water damage and rippling, along the top margins, with images entire unaffected. Prints in overall very good- to very good+ condition overall. vg- to vg+. Item #46194
