Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1909. First edition. Softcover. Quarto. xxxi, 201pp. 7 facsimile plates. Original blue wraps with black lettering on cover, reinforced with blue library tape on spine, white handwritten lettering, housed in grass green buckram library portfolio box with gilt lettering on spine. "The present volume does something towards filling up a gap in Christian Aramaic literature. The version of the New Testament which it represents was that adopted by the Orthodox, or Malkite party, which separated from the great Monophysite Church at the Council of Chalcedon in A.D. 451. How long that smaller Church maintained a separate existence we cannot tell, but it is safe to assume that as the Syriac language disappeared, its members became absorbed in the Arabic-speaking portion of the Orthodox Greek Church, as it exists in Palestine at the present day. Their lectionaries were copied as late as the twelfth century; but the process of absorption was no doubt a gradual one. And that is why we have no record of their extinction." (Lewis). Illustrated with seven facsimiles of text at rear. Critical edition with manuscript notes. Four page bibliography. Text bilingual in Greek and Syriac on facing pages. Slipcase and spine of book with library sticker. Library stamps at top and bottom edge. Wraps with medium chipping along edges and two small tears, reinforced with transparent tape on back cover.
