The phonetic alphabet contains thirty-nine single symbols, according to the Ministry of Education, April 1919. In addition twenty-two double-symbol characters are added following the Chinese "fan ch'ieh" or blending method used in all native dictionaries indicating the sound of the character. The picture phonetic dictionary contains the thirty-nine symbols of the phonetic alphabet and four hundred commonly used combinations. Further detailed instruction in both prefaces facilitate the efficient use of the dictionary. The pictorial part of the dictionary features the Chinese letters next to explanatory drawings, including some drawings intended to help further the pronunciation of the Chinese symbols.
