Berlin: Wilhelm Ernst & Sohn, 1939. First edition. Softcover. Quarto. 16pp. Original textured gray stapled wraps with black lettering on cover, protected by modern mylar. Excerpt from a lecture given at the scientific conference of the German Steel Manufacture Association on October 6, 1938, in Berlin. Special print of the periodical "Der Stahlbau," volume 1939, issue 4, supplement of the periodical "Die Bautechnik." Brief historical outlook on the use of steel in construction, quoting the iron gate at the Black Pagode in Kanaruk (British India) from 1250 as the first know use of iron in construction, and other examples mentioned by writers such as Leo Battiste Alberti, Jacopo-Lafri, etc.

Actual steel construction as a norm is set to have begun around 1850. The pamphlet gives an overview of steel constructions in Europe, outside of Germany, and is illustrated with twenty-one offset reproductions of photographs depicting various architectural steel constructions, e.g. the first complete steel skeleton construction in France, the "Chocolaterie Menier & Cy." in Noisiel near Paris, in 1870 by the architect Jules Saulnier.
