Divided into five sections this first-person account of the Italian campaign of Word War I. by the American Frederic Henry is based on Hemingway's own experience during the campaign. The book was first published in 1929 and was favorably received by readers and critics. Nevertheless, after publication it was the target of various attacks claiming its pornographic nature. Hemingway had gone to great length to exclude graphic descriptions of sex, using the literary device of omission.
