Original white three-quarter cloth over color illustrated boards with blue lettering on cover, black on paper label of spine. Decorative endpapers and title page. These and sixteen full page hand-colored illustrations by Freyhold with affectionate rhymes by Christian Morgenstern on facing pages, starting with "Ich bin der Osterpostillon, der Frühlingsgöttin treuster Sohn (I am the Easter Postillion, the Spring Goddess' most faithful son). The beautiful, expressionistic picture books for children by Freyhold are considered the precursors of the modern children's books. E. R. Weiß early on described the Freyhold children's books as "freyholdisch in their untold affectionate virginity and childishness." Text in German, Gothic script. Binding with light wear along edges with both cloth corners at bottom missing. Covers browned. Starting at inside front cover.
