The work is a fascinating history of pharmacology and alchemy throughout the ages, from the Greco-Roman period through the late 19th century, documenting the transition of the subject out from the realm of superstition into the era of the scientific revolution and the enlightenment. The book is illustrated throughout with numerous figures reproduced lithographically in b/w from earlier texts and original artwork. The final two pages offer an index of alchemical symbols.
Binding with light wear along edges, small bumps and chips with sticker removed from back cover leaving the area lighter than the rest of binding. Inscription by H. M. Whelpley inked to inside front cover with one and a half inch starting at lower gutter. Library stamp on front free endpaper and additional inscription by the publisher inked to second front free endpaper. Number 4206 and the letter P inked to margin of title page. Block age-toned.
