Original brown three-quarter morocco over speckled brown cloth with gilt lettering on red labels of spine and blind-stamped and gilt tooling on spine; raised bands. Frontispiece lithographs. Additional illustrated title pages. Historiated initials. One of Thackeray's later satirical novels focusing on psychological and moral growth of the young protagonist (Bildungsroman), the coming of age of Arthur Pendennis. Illustrated with in-text drawings and twenty-three lithographs with captions in each volume.

Binding with some wear along edges, small chips, light scuffing of joints and two inch closed tear at bottom of back joint in volume one, also few small chips on spine here. Gilt lettering and tooling on spines somewhat faded and three small streaks on front cover leather near spine. Ex-Libris of Francis G. Landys-Lumsdaine on inside front covers, with some offsetting to opposing page. Some foxing of title pages and offsetting images to opposing pages, including in-text illustrations. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. g+ to vg. Item #44517
