Catalogue of Italian Maiolica

London: Board of Education, 1940. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto. xxiii, 485, xxvii pp., 222 plates. Rebound in bright red cloth with gilt lettering on spine, retaining original brown wraps. Frontispiece. "In the preface to the Guide to Italian Maiolica published in 1933 it was explained that the work was intended to serve as the introduction to a new detailed catalogue, shortly to be published, of the collections of maiolica in the Museum. This catalogue has now been completed by Mr. Bernard Rackham, until recently Keeper of the Department of Ceramics (Victoria and Albert Museum); it is designed to supersede the "Descriptive Catalogue" by C. Drury E. Fortnum published in 1873 which, admirable as it was admitted in its time to be, has inevitably become to some extent obsolete, particularly owing to the rapid growth of the collection, for which the benefactions of Mr. George Salting and others, during the last half century, have been largely responsible." (Preface). Illustrated with nearly 1,500 photographic reproductions of the museum's holdings in volume 2. Bibliography at front of volume 1, descriptive list of plates in volume 2. Some offsetting from original brown wraps to free endpapers, else in very good to near fine condition. vg to near fine. Item #44015
