This scarce monograph is based on the results of the Napoleonic Sanhedrin regarding the civil status of the Jews living in France. It was published in colonial Mexico by Juan López Cancelada, the editor of the "Gazeta de la Nueva España."
On May 30, 1806, Napoleon passed the decree that paved the way to the creation of an assembly of Jewish notables who would represent the Jewish community and be a consultative body with the aim of bringing Jews over to his policies. «According to a report which I have received, certain Jews in several northern départements, whose only profession is that of money-lender, have, by the accumulation of the most immoderate interest, put many farmers in these lands in the greatest financial straits. […] On 15 July, in our fair town of Paris, an assembly of individuals professing the Jewish religion and living in France shall be formed.» «The members of this assembly shall number 111, taken from the stated départements and selected by the Prefects from amongst Rabbis, householders and other Jews distinguished by their probity and enlightenment.» (Correspondance of Napoleon I, n°10291).
The Council met five times between July and September, 1806. As a result of these meetings, Napoleon decided to summon a Great Sanhedrin, as a modern version of the council which in ancient times met in Jerusalem. The Grand Sanhedrin met several times from February 10 to March 9, 1807.
This volume is complete with its 8 engraved plates (some are dated 1808), of which 6 depict Jews being tortured, one shows the Grand Sanhedrin meeting for the first time, and the last engraving is a map of Alaska and the Bering Straits showing the itinerary taken by the Jews to flee Asia and take refuge in America.
