London: Williams and Norgate, 1912. First edition. Hardcover. Small Quarto. ix, 375 (1), viii, 388 (4)pp. Original green cloth with blind-stamped vignettes on covers and gilt lettering and vignettes on spines. Illustrated endpapers. Remarkable study in magic and religion with a semantic approach rather than one on rites and customs. "In the following studies I have taken all symbolism to be my province, but the subjects illustrated are, as before, hitherto-uninterpreted printers' marks and paper-marks. Most of these signs have entirely lost their primitive significance, and are now used purely for commercial purposes; but there was a time when they were not only trade signs, but were also hieroglyphics, under which the pearl of great price was revered." (Bayley). Illustrated with an abundance of symbolic drawings and reproduction of woodcuts throughout. Contains elaborate index and four pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. Bindings with light wear along edges, light fraying and chipping at heads of spines. Illustrated front endpaper of volume one with plane foxing, respectively offsetting. Some pencil markings in margins of block. Starting at page 145 of volume one. Foredge and bottom edge uncut. Bindings and interior in overall good+ to very good condition. g+ to vg. Item #43979
