Graduated from the prestigious École Polytechnique; Participated at the French expeditionary force in Rome in 1849-50, to reestablish the Holy See's temporal power; Veteran of the Crimean war (1853-56), Italy (1859); Served in Algeria; Taken prisoner in Metz in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war (1870-71); Military attaché in Vienna in 1874; Promoted colonel in 1875, Brigadier General in 1880, and Divisional General in 1886.
