Brown library tape on the spine, with white lettering. Beveled edges. Photo-illustrated frontispiece. The work is a detailed account of the history of Christian Missionary activity in the Shantung (Shandong) province in China. The book includes a first section containing chapters of overview and introduction to the general history of the province, as well its society, culture and spiritual beliefs. The second part deals in detail with the history of Protestant missionary work in the region during the previous fifty plus years and provides specific accounts of pioneering missionaries and Christian martyrs.

The text is accompanied by 3 detailed fold-out maps; two of Shandong province in color (one historic 12.5 x17.5", one based on missionary activity, 26x19") and one of Jinan city, (aka "Tsinan") measuring 14x34". Also illustrated with nearly 100 b/w photographic reproductions and a few other figures, throughout the book. The work is dedicated to 孫寶琦 (Sun Baoqi), the governor of Shandong province (who would later go on to serve as premier of the Republic from Feb-May of 1914) and features his frontispiece photo-portrait. The book was published at a pivotal time in Chinese history, with the end of Imperial China and the establishment of the Republic of China.
