The is the scarce first edition of Antoni Gladysz's memoir of his time as a prisoner at the Gross-Rosen concentration camp, during WWII. In 1941 Gladysz was arrested by the Gestapo, as a result of his involvement in the Polish resistance, and then sent to Gross-Rosen (1942-1945). Shortly after the war his experiences with the brutality in the camp were published in this book. Includes fascinating in-text illustrations throughout. Illustrated publisher's ads on the back cover and additional advertisements on the interior covers. Text in Polish. Wrappers with some light smudges and age toning to covers. Minor rubbing to extremities, including a small closed tear at the tail of the spine. Back cover with some writing in blue pen along to the left margin. Interior in with some age toning, minor creasing and/or closed tears to the edges of some pages. A number of leaves have come loose from the stapled binding but are present. Wrappers and interior in very good- condition overall. Protected by modern mylar. vg-. Item #43769

* Antoni Gladysz (1907- 1991) was a Polish social activist, writer, deputy in the Sejm of the Polish People's Republic and agricultural engineer. He was a graduate of Warsaw University's Life Science program and served as an agricultural inspector before WWII. After the war, he was active in the Polish Union of Former Political Prisoners. He wrote a number of books on agriculture and gardening throughout his life in addition to a number of books published about his experiences during the war. In 1957 he was elected to the Sejm in Tarnów as a non-party candidate, and was supported by the "Znak" Polish Catholic movement.

*The following year a second edition of the book was published by Zwiazek B. Wiezniów Ideowo-Politycznych, with different cover artwork.
