This atlas volume was published to accompany the two text volumes (missing in this offer) of "Reports to the Secretary of the Treasury, in Relation to the Condition of Sea Life on the Fur-Seal Rookeries of the Pribilof Islands and to Pelagic Sealing in Bering Sea and the Pacific Oceans."
It presents 45 (of 46) b/w photographic reproductions of several rookeries located on two of the Bering Sea Islands, and documents the gruesome methods employed in the late 19th century for killing fur seals.
The photographs numbered 42 to 46 are rather graphic and depict the seal killing that took place at St Paul Island on July 1895.
29 of the 45 photographic plates contained in this atlas are folded (some multi-folded) and linen-backed.
Back cover water-stained. Title page is missing. Plate 40 is missing, as well as the folded part of plate 41. Sporadic water-staining along outer margin of plates (not affecting photographs). Closed tear at lower margin of plates 42 to 46, with more water-staining along edges. Binding in overall good- to good, interior in fair to good condition. Fair-Good. Item #43551
