Gotha: Friedrich Andreas Perthes A.-G. No date, ca. 1920. Box. Picture Model Kit (11 1/4 x 8 3/4 x 2 1/4"). Box with illustrated ochre top with red and brown lettering, compartmentalized, staggered brown and ochre bottom with string-ties, twenty variant felt forms in four colors and gloss board, tweezers, frame, cardboard stand and rulers. Includes booklet with nine patterns. Instructions printed on inside of box lid.
The various forms of the Model Kit facilitate the creation of manifold pictures with a simple laminar effect yet a distinct character due to the plane felt material in the colors white, red, brown and green. The advantage of this kit is the ease of handling the material without the cumbersome application of paint or glue. The suggested patterns are a series of ideas geared to stimulate the artist's mind. The motifs to be assembled are arranged in the simplest yet characteristic form, the essential element of this kit. The instructions printed to the inside of the box lid include the visual presentation of all forms used in this model kit. All forms are numbered and easy to recognize in the suggested patterns. The tweezers allow easy handling of the forms which are attached to the frame which are then pressed to the frame with one's fingers. Once the image is completely layed out the gloss board is applied to press the forms to the frame evenly.
The enclosed booklet is published by Franz Schmidt & Co. The suggested patterns display motifs taken from fairy tales as well as animals, architecture, boats, clowns and ornamental arrangements. The design of kit and booklet suggest that the time of production is around 1920 due to the mix of elements in design found in New Objectiviy on one hand and the traditional Sueterlin print of the title script on the other. Back cover of booklet with illustrated advertisements of follow up kits. Text in German. Lid of box lightly stained and some rubbing with closed tears at corners of side panels but holding firm. Some foxing on inside of lid. Booklet with two inch closed tear at head, one inch at tail of spine. Minor foxing of block. White felt forms partially slightly yellowed. Plane of the framed cracked along inside of frame but still firm. Box, booklet and interior in overall good+ to very good condition. g+ to vg. Item #43253
