Originally published in 1556 by Vincenzo Cartari (c.1531-1569), an Italian mythographer and diplomat of the Italian Renaissance, "Le vere e nove imagini de gli dei delli antichi ("the true and new images depicting the gods of the ancients") contains no less than 2 double-page and 227 full-page and in-text woodcuts of the ancient gods by Cesare Malfatti.
In this work, Cartari focusses on the gods' iconography and explains their clothing, expressions, poses and attributes. The antiquarian and philologist Lorenzo Pignoria added extra text and notes to this 1615 edition along with "Seconda Parte delle Imagini de gli Dei Indiani," a second volume containing a short series of images of Mexican and Japanese deities (bound at the end of our copy).
Binding age-toned and partly darkened. Contemporary previous owner's inscription on inside of front cover, and previous owner's name on title page. Title slightly stained, with sporadic closed tears along fore-edge. Minor wormin at lower margin of pp. 255-274 (not affecting lettering). Minor and sporadic water stains throughout (not affecting lettering). Minor foxing throughout. Text in Italian. Binding in overall good, interior in good to very good condition. g to vg. Item #43052
