The set is a monumental archeological study of the ancient city of Jericho, and a comprehensive documentation of the excavations undertaken by British archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon and her team there between 1952-1958. Her work established Jericho as a world famous archaeological site and provided evidence for it being among the oldest known continually inhabited cities on the world. This work, which utilized Kenyon's then pioneering stratigraphic techniques and ceramic assemblage analysis, continues to this day to be considered the foundational and most important on the subject of ancient Jericho.

The volumes are profusely illustrated throughout with countless in text figures, diagrams, and maps, in addition to charts and tables, analyzing all the various aspects of the dig including spacial layout of the sites, artifacts, human remains, stratigraphic analysis, and construction techniques. The volumes contain a total of 489 b/w plates of illustrations and photographic reproductions, printed on glossy paper. Vols 1 and 2 include a total of 4 fold-out plates (three maps and a 18.5x16" chart). Extensive indexes of plates and tables of content. Some volumes have photocopies of contemporary reviews of the publication laid in at the front cover.

Bindings with some minor to light rubbing to the extremities. Minor scratches and smudges to covers. Some light smudges and foxing to the sides of the book blocks. Some interiors with the signatures, ink stamps and/ or bookplates of the previous owner at the interior front coves. Bindings in very good- to very good+, interiors in very good+ to near fine condition overall. vg- to near fine. Item #43051
