Small octavo. 32pp. Light brown printed wrappers, with black lettering on the front cover. This is a first edition of Berdiaev's work on anti-Semitism from a Christian philosophical point of view. The work condemns and dissects many of the roots of anti-Semitism in the Christian community. The work was published while the author was living in exile in France, and makes many specific references to then contemporary anti-Semitic attitudes in that country. In years since, the work has been translated into English at least once. Text in Russian. Binding with some light chipping and cracking along the head & tail of the spine. Age toning to pages. Nikolai Alexandrovich Berdyaev (1874 – 1948) was a Russian Orthodox religious and political philosopher. He is often associated with Christian Existentialism, and also wrote on the subjects of Russian history and Russian national identity. After numerous clashes with Soviet authorities, he was expelled from Russia and sent into exile in September 1922. He first settled in Berlin, then Paris, and started his own "Religious Philosophical Academy". Orwell was aquainted with his work, and included him amoung the 'cultural pessimists' in his "As I Please" column for 'Tribune', December 24th 1943. Alternate historical spellings of his name in English include "Berdiaev" and "Berdiaeff", and of his given name as ""Nicolas" and "Nicholas"
