London: Printed by W. Bowyer for the Editor, 1723. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo (8 x 5"). [14], xcviii, 427, [5]pp. Later blind-stamped paneled calf, with gold lettering and ruling to spine. Decorative headpieces and initials.

First edition of this biography of George Monk, one of the key figures in English political military and naval history, and the man single-handedly responsible for the Restoration of Charles II after the Civil War and Cromwell's rule.

This adulatory biography - amounting at times to a hero-worshipping hagiography - is of great historical interest, being the first biography of the great man, written by his personal physician, Thomas Skinner.

Binding partly rubbed along edges, with closed tears along joints. Offsetting to endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait missing. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition. g to vg. Item #42663
