Fifteen years before the decipherment of the hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion (1823), Ignazio Rossi's "Etymologiae Aegyptiacae" was one of the first works which attempted to establish the relations between Coptic and other languages.
A brilliant Semitist, Rossi compared Coptic words with related expressions in Semitic (Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic), Latin and Greek.
