The publication is #47 in the new series of the famous French modern art periodical "XXe Siecle" (The 20th Century). Profusely illustrated throughout with b/w and color reproductions of artwork. This issue features a double page fold-out lithograph by Joan Miro, with accompanies an essay by editor Alain Jouffroy. The volume also includes essays on the work of Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, and Hans Hartung, among others. The end of the book features eight unpaginated pages of translations of the essays in this volume, in English. Text in French and English. The publication was originally started by Gualtieri di San Lazzaro in Paris in 1938, and ran for six issues, until 1939. It was resumed again in 1949 under the direction of San Lazzaro with the title "XXe Siecle, Nouvelle série" until his death in 1974. The publication continued from 1974-1981, with Alain Jouffroy as principle editor.
