Bound in three quarter diced olive leather over marbled boards with gilt lettering on spine; raised bands. Ribbon markers. Frontispiece engraving of the author with tissue guard. The work is divided into three volumes starting the journey in the Eastern states of the Union and San Francisco. Volume two describes the journey in the heartland of California, and the third volume, in two parts, the journey into the Northwest of North America in two chapters, part one travels along the northern Pacific coast, part two desert and the Mormons. Some of the text on pages 21-29 is in Hebrew.

Israel Joseph Benjamin was a Romanian-Jewish historian. His pen name Benjamin II was a reference to Benjamin of Tudela, the famous 12th Century Jewish traveler. During his travels in America he spent most of the time in the Eastern states and then, by way of Panama, went to San Francisco and up into the Oregon territory as far as Vancouver. Part two exclusively describes his travels through the inland of California. The first part of volume three deals with the Northwestern part as mentioned above, and his travels in the desert and among the Mormons are described in the second part of the third volume.
