History of Zionism 1600-1918. 2 volumes bound in one (Complete)

New York: KTAV, 1969. Reprint. Hardcover. Quarto (9 1/4 x 6 1/2"). LXI, [3], 313, [1]pp (Vol. 1); LXIII, [1], 480pp (Vol. 2). Original grey cloth, with silver lettering to spine and front cover. Photographic frontispiece in each volume.

This volume is KTAV's facsimile edition of Sokolow's monumental work on Zionism, originally published in London in 1919 by Longmans, Green and Co..

It contains a new introduction (1969) by Arthur Hertzberg which gives a summary of Sokolow's life, work, and significance as a leader in the Zionist Movement.

Two features make this production significant. 1) It stands as the first attempt to trace the origin and development of the Zionist idea in Europe, principally in England. 2) The political history and literature of English Jews and Gentiles serve as Sokolow's resource material.

Volume I traces Zionism from 1600 up to 1900. The author found that the Christian ideal of the restoration of Israel was more important than the political and humanitarian forces supporting this cause.

The second volume contains the work of the second through the eleventh meetings of the Zionist Congress, and reaches its climax in the section entitled "Zionism During the War."
